The Yobe State government announced restriction of movement of persons and vehicles on December 28, 2013, Saturday, to allow for the Local Government elections in the state.
Eli Lazarus, the spokesperson, 3 Division Special Operation Battalion, confirmed this in a statement on December 27, 2013, Friday.
He said the restriction of movement would last between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Eli Lazarus said the restriction is an effort by the state government and the military to ensure a hitch free Local Government polls.
He further noted that all the essential service providers will be allowed freedom of movement to discharge their duties.
Residents were enjoined to cooperate with security agencies and also avoid any act capable of breaching the public peace during and after the election exercise.
It would be recalled that Yobe, as well as Borno and Adamawa, have been under emergency rule since May as soldiers battle to check the Boko Haram insurgency.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on December 16 in Abuja said it would not be able to conduct the 2015 general elections in states under emergency rule.
The INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, said that the commission was hopeful that the security situation in the affected states would improve before the 2015 general elections.
However, last weekend, the Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Geidam, said the state would use the council elections to prove that elections can be conducted peacefully in Yobe.
